ODIN - 4K VR HEADSET FROM RUSSIA WILL BE RELEASED IN SUMMER 2019.
Russian startup DEUS will showcase its new SteamVR compatible headset called “Odin” at CES2019.
The company plans to release a version of the Odin Pre headset in February. The "pre-production" model is targeted at enterprises and developers and will ship with a 3DoF controller for an estimated $ 1100 price tag. An improved consumer version with a 6DoF controller will be released in summer 2019, but the price is currently unknown.
The headset features two 2160 × 2160 LCD panels for a total resolution of 4320 × 2160 (4K × 2K) - higher than any headset on the market. DEUS claims its Fresnel lenses provide a 110 ° field of view, just like the HTC Vive.
The consumer version of Odin will use the VirtualLink USB-C cable, while the earlier version of Odin will use the DisplayPort connector.
So far, Odin uses photodiodes and laser base stations for tracking. These are not SteamVR base stations. The company has developed their own similar system, which they call “Rock”. DEUS claims that Horus base stations have a wider throw angle than Lighthouse and that only two included stations can cover 200 square meters (roughly 45 × 45 feet). The company also informs us that Horus supports an infinite number of base stations for large gaming spaces.
In Q2 2019, the company will showcase its 6DoF controllers for Odin using the same Horus tracking system as the headset. The controllers are somewhat similar to the Oculus Touch, but with trackpads instead of thumb triggers. These 6DOF ESCs will be included in the Odin trim coming summer 2019.
The headset is SteamVR compatible, which means it should be able to play most (if not all) VR games on Steam. Preview buyers, however, will need to wait for the 6DoF controllers to be able to try out most of Steam's games.
The United States, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China have dominated the VR hardware space ever since. DEUS hopes he can add Russia to this list. If all goes to plan, Odin could be a worthy addition to the premium PC VR market.
